Apoteket AB is Sweden’s leading pharmacy company, with a strong level of public trust. With around 400 stores, over 550 agents, and one of the country’s largest loyalty programs Apoteket+ with over three million members, Apoteket combines a strong physical presence with a robust digital platform through apoteket.se and the Apoteket app.
When I joined Apoteket, one of my first tasks was to design a new system for existing services and we needed to standardized Apoteket's product UI elements for growing and appending new features.
Design System
At Apoteket, I took design lead of our design system, an initiative that has fundamentally improved how we design, build, and scale our digital products. Especially when we started to build Apoteket's new app. From the beginning, our focus was not only on consistency and efficiency, but also on creating a system grounded in usability and accessibility (WCAG).
The design system brings together reusable UI components, design patterns, documentation, and code into a single, cohesive framework that supports desktop, mobile & app. It's easier for us designers to work faster and more consistently, while giving developers access to clearly defined components and implementation guidelines.
Throughout the process, we made accessibility a priority. All components were designed and developed with WCAG standards in mind, ensuring that our interfaces are inclusive and usable for all. From color contrast and keyboard navigation to screen reader compatibility, accessibility is built into the foundation of the system.
The result is a scalable, maintainable system that enables us to deliver high-quality, consistent user experiences while supporting our commitment to digital inclusion.
